Just about to start our last leg for the journey home. Leaving LA for Sydney, where an entire day vanishes for us! (crossing the date line in this direction is weird). After a month abroad, I am very much looking forward to seeing my dog. Full weekend of activities planned with him.

Now that flight is over can say who this was …. It was Dustin Hoffman! Such a spin out chatting pulsars and black holes with him, but from our short convos he seemed like a real nice guy and was really interested in compact remnants! 🫥😂

This is so random and wild. I’ve just been explaining the differences between canonical pulsars vs. MSPs to an Oscar winner. Even explained some of the cool new IMBH Omega Cent results to him and he is fascinated by it! I must let the authors of the paper know about this ……

Here’s one of the bits of news that I will be writing up about … this is not new, the arXiv preprint was out a little while back … But still this is a very neat find! Reporting of an IMBH inferred through stellar velocities in Omega Cent! Now, we just need some millisecond pulsars around it 🤞🏽 🧪🔭

Two main sub-categories of pulsars are 'slow' pulsars and millisecond pulsars (fast ones). Pulsar emission physics is extremely complex and poorly understood but historically thought to be potentially different between these two. New pre-print challenges this stating common emission physics! 👀🧪🔭

Just posted my 90-sec reel on Insta from our day out to Mount Etna yesterday. We got up to 2900m but weren’t allowed further up due to new eruption risks. Still, only a few hundred metres from the caldera rim!
Did I mention I really love volcanoes?! 🌋

Wow …. I’ve heard of severe allergies but this seems like extreme level sensitivity. Must be really tough for folks like this … guessing going out for food or food courts in malls are no-go zones for them. So much restriction but it sounds like it’s needed 😳

Don’t really have an answer for the first question (and not sure there will ever be solid evidence of it), but for the second question - researchers continue to explore MOND and alternative solutions for gravity. However, General Relativity has lots of supporting evidence over many years.

Does anyone else find it weird how we just take for granted that there is a star that just hangs there in our sky. We think of it as the Sun and don’t give it much more thought but there is an entire star that is just there and we can see its features, study it, feel its radiation, etc. A STAR ⭐️

Look at these remarkable patterns on the slopes of Etna’s venting calderas. 🌋 Above the point where any flora or fauna exists, it really was like being on another planet. The best way to describe it was “desolate and silent; the absence of life’.

There’s some souvenir shops up here, so I got a novelty ring that features obsidian from Etna’s lava flows. The ring, forged from the fires of the mountain. The one ring to rule them all … and in the darkness bind them.

Half way up! Etna smouldering in the background (we are on the north side and the recent eruptions that are puffing gases are on the south side) In the foreground is a long river of solidified lava from a former eruption (2002 I think).

Will do! Don’t think there will be much service up there but will take loads of pics and share when we come back down off the mountain. Due to recent eruptions we’re only allowed up to 3000m, so unfortunately won’t get any views of the caldera (3700m) but still close enough to experience it.
