Between-school tracking seems to be one of the main reasons why we see larger SES gaps in achievement progress in Germany than in France and the United States. Course-by-course tracking contributes less to SES-achievement gaps.

Using harmonized longitudinal data, we find a stronger growth of SES-achievement gaps in secondary school in Germany and England than in France and the US. Country differences can largely be attributed to between school differences, whereas within school differences are similar across countries.
