This was not a thing I was doing consciously. Like I wasn’t thinking to myself, “Nope! No girly books for me!” It was just a habit I’d formed out of unconscious bias. I’m forever grateful to have been made aware of my limitations, and broadened my horizons accordingly.

When I started my channel, I had been reviewing on a website for more than 10 years. And when I got into the booktube community, I met a great many women readers and readers from diverse backgrounds. This forced a reevaluation of my own habits. I discovered 85% of my reading was male SFF authors.

Social disapproval from their peers seems to have a much bigger impact on how kids choose to behave than seeing adults angry with them. You are right that adult anger will mostly just drive them into further bad behavior.

Well, of course I’d be entirely happy with just the detention. (I do not, contrary to the views of several reactionaries in this thread, think the idea of swatting kids is awesome. 😅) but speaking, generally, one thing that does tend to work is shaming bad kids before their peers.

To be fair, I would absolutely love a prequel to The Passion of the Christ based on the Infancy Gospel of Thomas, which might well have been titled “We Need to Talk About Jesus”. Among other behavioral issues, the adolescent Jesus kills a boy who pisses him off and then blinds his parents.

Oh, I don’t see it as neutral at all. The Vietnam war protesters are depicted as radicalized America-hating malcontents who slap women around. Forrest ends up a happy millionaire simply because he does everything he’s told and just floats through life (like a feather), challenging nothing.

What’s funny generally about so much Christian pop culture is that it’s mere product that never does anything artistically interesting or innovative. It’s all entirely imitative of secular pop culture. Christian songs are just secular love songs with God or Jesus standing in for the love interest.
