Have spent most of today on trains. Did go to Liberty’s to swoon over fabric, brought English cheese for Dad, got given free ice cream and have been called “darling” by half a dozen strangers. Next stop Belgium

I wrote a thing 😊 It's great to share how Dunedin and Invercargill have transformed their city centres into walkable, welcoming spaces for everyone. These initiatives hopefully help inspire other cities around Aotearoa to do the same.

Today’s adventures were reading on the sofa, more ridiculously cute villages and pond dipping.

Libraries are one of the great joys of life. I have never recovered from “free books, no just take them” and hope never to do so.

Riotous veggie garden border and chubby topiary at Hidecote. Also, the National Trust scone of the month is raspberry and ginger. I recommend!

Because the world is tiny, there is a family from my village who I see frequently on the dog walking hill, on my flight to London.

Maybe no one has yet recommended the Anna Jones Carrot and Tahini (which has a beautiful dash of orange in it)? It cures all the things, especially heavy hearts.

More Dad, not me! Mum was from here and met Dad, who is English, on her OE. We moved to Belgium when I was 2 for 6 months and 46 years later, Dad is still there.

He is! I grew up there (from aged 2-19) and though he did a bit in Hong Kong and the US, he moved back there permanently in about 2000 and is never planning on leaving.

I also asked whether Istas, the steak and chips place near where I grew up, has changed in the last 30 years. Seeing as it has been open since the 1890s, and some of the staff might have been there since then, it was a silly question. Steak bearnaise, saignant avec frites et salade, it is!

Trying to convince Dad that I am travelling to Brussels to see him. He is the reason for the season, and he doesn't need to organise things for my visit I would sit in his living room for 4 days and chat if that is what he wanted. He is not yet convinced.

Flocks. I want to see groupings of birds that are actually sufficient. Not just one individual, spotted out of the corner of my eye and talked about for days. I want flocks, dammit.

The flowering currants up the road are budding and I’ve cut some for the house. And the smell of the leaves reminds me that I made a gorgeous currant leaf cordial last spring. Time to dig out the recipe as spring is on its way.
