The Daily News Union is deeply concerned about this issue, and you should be, too. This morning the NewsGuild of New York is sending this statement to lawmakers to show support for the bill. Please share if you think at least 90 years of public access should stand.

There is a bill in the state senate called the "Keep Police Radio Public Act" currently sitting in the NY Senate Finance Committee that would address the problem of NYPD encryption.

This move, in addition to pushing reporters out of NYPD headquarters and into an adjoining shipping container/shared newsroom, is part of a disturbing trend by the Adams administration to sideline journalists and remove them as observers of the police and how they do their jobs.

This would allow the police to tightly control the narrative to a degree we haven't yet seen.

If all the precincts are encrypted that would essentially be a blackout on public information, preventing our photographers and reporters from arriving at scenes and gathering information firsthand by observation and from witnesses.

The NYPD is pushing to encrypt police scanner transmissions, and has already begun with 10 precincts in Brooklyn and Staten Island. This affects the Daily News more than most publications-- we rely on the scanner day and night to cover breaking news.

In ‘14, a NY Daily News photog heard about the death of Eric Garner on police radio transmissions. He rushed out and found the guy who took the video.

Now, the NYPD is moving to encrypt all radio transmissions. The @nydnunion.bsky.social stands behind a bill to keep those transmissions public.

Three years ago today, I was a slimmer man and sporting a sweet The Expanse t-shirt — and I mailed in my yes vote to become a union man.

Yesterday, the @nydnunion.bsky.social walked off the job for 24 hours.

If you look at the print edition of today’s New York Daily News, it’s pretty grim — just nine stories and one brief with local bylines, and one of those bylines was just “Daily News Staff.” Most were written by editors. 🧵

Today, @nydnunion.bsky.social is on a one-day strike to call attention to new overtime policies that are putting the screws to their hard-working reporting staff.

(And if Alden Global Capital would actually invest in the paper, that would be great, too.)

So today, don’t click on the Daily News!

Good morning to all, except Alden Global Capital!

Today, @nydnunion.bsky.social is walking off the job for 24 hours.

Management has been trying to cut overtime at the paper across the board and screw with our hours. Never mind the editorial staff has about 50 people to cover a city of 8 million.

Every day brings new adventures. Now, management is trying to undermine our power. Alden’s latest proposal would allow the Daily News to dodge the union and use temporary employees, supervisors and anyone they can find to do Guild work. We won’t stand for it.

Fun fact: Patrick Soon-Shiong could have stepped up and stopped Alden from buying Tribune and the NY Daily News, but he hid under a rock and abstained from voting.

The Daily News has printed every day for more than 100 years. But that streak has been in danger for months. Several print editors departed without being replaced. The current staff says “it’s a miracle” the paper hasn’t missed a day.

Fun fact about that Axios story touting the NY Daily News’ “comeback” — we had no Metro Editor when that story ran in Oct. 2022 (he left that August), and we still have no Metro Editor today.

Remember when the bosses made a show of reinvesting in NYC coverage? axios.com/2022/10/04/new…

Now they’re messing with overtime for metro reporters so they can save money.

The Daily News has been slashing staff for decades. It’s only gotten worse under Alden. When the Daily News Union formed in April 2021, there were around 70 members. Now, the staff is at least 20% smaller because of continuing cuts.

The Daily News is New York’s Hometown Paper. But the bosses aren’t committed to keeping it that way. For nearly 1 1/2 years, the Daily News has been operating without a dedicated Metro Editor.

We have repeatedly requested his presence at the bargaining table, including at our upcoming session tomorrow. Andrew, there’s still time to do the right thing.

Meanwhile, our editor-in-chief, Andrew Julien, has steadfastly refused to attend a single bargaining session, leaving resolution of these critical subjects to the company’s white-shoe, union-busting lawyers.

We have demanded that the company retract this policy and reimburse the affected reporters immediately. Hours and overtime are a mandatory subject of bargaining — we're at the table right now — and not something management can implement unilaterally.

This unilateral and illegal change will make for a worse paper — and amount to a significant pay cut for many of us in the middle of the holiday season.

This is simply not how the news business works. When a source calls or a story breaks, on nights or on weekends, our reporters want to leap into action — not be threatened with discipline for working extra hours.
