I'm so grateful for the way you and everyone at DAIR articulate the limitations of these models, the problems with the bubble, and the reasons we should care. Truly a balm in these trying times.

Years of watching @janelleshane.com mess around with these models has made it just so clear to me that any benefit from these models comes with (a) skill and mastery in using them for the right job (b) bucket loads of human curation.

If you've been thinking "I don't get the hype, it's AI is just generating factless slop" - you're actually right!

The latest Mystery AI Hype Theater 3000 episode feat. Molly Crockett and Lisa Messeri is a great listen for academics and researchers on the topic of generative AI coming for our jobs (badly): www.dair-institute.org/maiht3k/

I'm grateful to @emilymbender.bsky.social @alexhanna.bsky.social and others who have been speaking on this persistently, before the current generation of commercial models.

- Generative AI can't do facts
- Generative AI can't reason
- Unless a model tells us what it's trained on, we should assume it's participated in the largest copyright theft in history
- No incremental improves are going to change this

I had the chance to read and review Thinking With Your Hands from Susan Goldin-Meadow, and it's a charming and well-honed tour through a life-time of research from a pioneer of Gesture Studies:

I think the main technically problem with including directional zwj-ing is that Unicode already had a lot of directionality stuff going on under the hood with writing system variation, adding more could mess with the way it interacts with writing systems that (eg) go right to left.

15.1 contained a handful of horizontal flipping people, so I guess use them like heck and maybe support will be extended to others?

"We are looking here at a population that is minoritized, in part, because of communicative differences... Despite the centrality of language to this situation, research in this area is led primarily by psychologists, with some speech therapists, a few sociologists, & the occasional anthropologist."

I think Gretchen did a great job in Because Internet of showing how the technical and social features of the internet combine to make it impressive, but not surprising. Unicode is such an unsung hero of the internet. Printing press and telegraphy slang are obvious and fascinating comparisons.

That's a great question, and one it can be hard to find reliable data on. The Unicode committee that handles emoji are definitely keen to use those insights to shape future releases, which is why tracking research is important!

Also, from one gesture researcher to another, if you have any thoughts about possible emoji or research on emoji as gesture, let me know! Always eager for people with expertise to weigh in!

The nod/shake proposals only really got up because they're flexible actions, not because of their specific yes/no functions. The shrug really fits with that Cooperrider et al. paper about the way Open Palm Prone crops up across cultures, it's so nifty it was encoded earlier!

Very excited about the 15.1 emoji for a bunch of reasons:
- new head nod/shake emoji (my proposals!) 🙂↕️🙂↔️
- lots of cool ZWJ emoji means I get to say 'zwidge' a lot
- right facing emoji!! people moving in either direction!!

The latest set of emoji (Unicode 15.1) are now on a bunch of devices. It's a rather unusual but very exciting update (including 2 proposals from me) - I had a lot of blog-based feelings about it:

Superlinguo turns 13 this week. In the ever-shifting online landscape I've loved having this anchor, and watching my interests and writing change over the years. I still post at least monthly. You can follow here, the mailing list, or good old RSS.
