There were more than 100 government-funded, church-run Alaska Native boarding schools in Alaska from the late 1800s through the 1960s. They separated young children from their families and forcibly immersed them in Euro-American traditions and the English language.

A new report says the total economic value of the Alaska seafood industry in 2021 and 2022 was $6 billion, slightly more than the $5.6 billion tallied in 2019, but a 2023 price collapse bodes ill for the industry.

Alaska lawmakers are considering a proposal that would further criminalize homelessness. In addition, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear a case that could determine if homeless people may be penalized for sleeping outside when adequate shelter is unavailable.

There are two bills to limit Alaska students’ sports participation to teams that match their sex at birth; 24 states have passed such laws. Another proposal would prohibit transgender people from using bathrooms that match their gender identity in schools.

Every one of the 15 samples – muscle, fat and liver from each of the five walruses harvested by subsistence hunters — held microplastics. In all, there were 73 microplastics isolated from the tissues, almost all of them fibers.

Alaska supplies fur trapper-style hats as part of the regular trooper uniform. They must be made with either otter or beaver fur, have leather straps, be unisex, be waterproof and windproof and be good to temperatures down to minus-40 degrees.
