i think about these things a lot as someone whose work is marketed as "children & teens". we have a media culture in this country where they are constantly being condescended to even by the most well meaning of people

going off of the nyt bs... how can anyone not see that this is a child's response to the way they've been treated by the whole country? the book bans, the tiktok ban, the screaming of conservatives that they must be pure & innocent? they are human beings too, even if their brains aren't cooked yet

yeah it is!!! & that was honestly something i had to learn from conversations with another middle school teacher friend... like even if they are haranguing you in the middle of class (which was what was happening to me w a kid this year) it's not personal!!

but the MINUTE you show these kids that you've taken it so personally-- & it is VERY HARD NOT TO!!! that's the moment they learn that this is the way they can have some tiny, infinitesimal measure of power over you. so you cannot frame it like that.

& it saddens me to see ppl in the comments making generalizations about the "vicious nature of 13 yr old girls"; that's not all that there is happening here. i don't think it serves anyone to make this about how hurtful this was to the teachers-- of course it's hurtful.

going to be flippant. they are scared. that's not to say there should be no consequences at all to them, but framing this in a natl newspaper as a children of the corn like scare instead of something the current political climate/tech conversations have wrought. that's incredibly irresponsible.

figure out which adults in their life can/not be trusted. they have heard of the tiktok ban they have seen the things on social media. they're trying to push against this in their own way & unfortunately it can be this cruel & this ugly. asking an 8th grader a question for the nyt-- ofc they are

i teach middle schoolers. i personally think the framing of this article is incredibly off & misunderstands the psychology of children enacting antisocial behavior. 7th & 8th grade is when they are testing boundaries & authority (i think ppl inherently understand this) & most of all trying to+
