No apology needed. It's a difficult but intriguing subject. As your (excellent) books describe, English xenophobia has deep roots. Is it tied to an early concept of nationalism? Relative isolation? Something else?

'Mild'? After a lifetime of dealing with racism, and much of it with people reassuring me things were improving, I've always known that the only thing that changed was racists were too embarrassed to speak out. Brexit and Farage changed that.

As a brown person living in England most of my life, I've always been aware that 20-30% have racist views. Brexit and similar factors have permitted them to be more open about it. Indeed, Brexit wouldn't have been possible without it.

Trip of a lifetime to South Africa to photograph wildlife. Virgin cancelled our flight just a few hours before departure. We're now flying out a day late, still trying to sort out the charter flight from Johannesburg to the reserve. I will be negotiating with Virgin for substantial compensation.

I think my dreams of writing fiction are dead. I can't begin to imagine the level of skill needed to craft something as good as this. It helps if you have read the Slow Horses books, but it would work as a standalone novel. There are no adjectives that can do justice to how good it is.

Whenever anything interesting is happening in the sky, every cloud in the area hurries over to visit me. They clearly got the memo a bit late on Friday night, so I managed to get something before they arrived. The cascade here would have been spectacular without the clouds.
