And keep being yourselves. Be your wonderful selves, and don't be afraid to admit that you have opposition, be it cultural, familial, or with friends. Don't put yourself in a dangerous position, but don't internally give people a pass for offensive remarks or behavior.

And if you are able to, talk to these people if you think they will listen. Try to help them understand where you are coming from and what you consider offensive. Again, easier said than done, but don't ignore it.
