Just be yourself, and if you can, express what you really think, what you really feel. It took me a while to learn that, I didn't feel comfortable enough to do so.

But that's okay to admit, it's okay to admit that sometimes life is being extremely unfair. So what I am ultimately trying to say is that you shouldn't hide feelings that something is wrong, personally, or culturally from yourself.

A while back, I talked about not having ideas for a pride-centered piece of art. And I still don't, yet I doubt that I will. Not because I can't actually think of something, but because it doesn't feel authentic. I only draw what I feel, and I don't feel hopeful about the coming months and years.

And if you are able to, talk to these people if you think they will listen. Try to help them understand where you are coming from and what you consider offensive. Again, easier said than done, but don't ignore it.

And keep being yourselves. Be your wonderful selves, and don't be afraid to admit that you have opposition, be it cultural, familial, or with friends. Don't put yourself in a dangerous position, but don't internally give people a pass for offensive remarks or behavior.

I shouldn't tune it out, because that means the threat is still there. So I do sincerely hope that those of you who are not out yet, like myself, and those of you who are out, look, and listen to the world around you. Take note of bigotry, even though it's easier said than done.

And there has been opposition every step of the way. Every time a queer person manages to obtain something resembling equal rights, there are a hundred people to remind them just how "dangerous" they are for being...not straight, as fucking stupid as it is. And I for one can't tune it out.

There's a good chance I'll get some flack for this, assuming people bother to come to this account at all. I was thinking about the rights that queer people have in the USA at least, and they didn't come peacefully. They didn't come naturally, the first pride "parade" was a riot.
