Gen X is not further to the right than their parent's generation. Statistical data from the Census Bureau and Pew Research are more reliable sources showing historical trends in political affiliation. Oregon Trail was invented in 1971 and played by the same kids who watched Breakfast Club in 1985.

Breakfast Club generation was in high school in 1985, born 1970ish. I was born 1980. By the late 80's my grade school had enough of the Apple II series to conduct computer classes. We played Oregon Trail. This is widely acknowledged.

I had to dig into this some. Can't find recent Census data; I don't think they ever ask about politicial affliation. Here's a 2018 Pew study showing what you'd expect from the model "the older you are, the more your heart dies"
