They had the first generation of desktop computers in elementary schools in the 1970s. That's where we first encountered Oregon Trail. That's also where they taught us how to write code via rote memorization, which is why many of us know how to do it today but don't know how we know it.

We learned BASIC in school. I was a partisan DOS kid, all PC at home as most of us did. A friend and I programmed an RPG about our school using batch files and ASCII text graphics.
