To be fair to him, he saw that the Peach Orchard/Wheat Field area was higher ground than the low land between Cemetery Ridge and the Round Tops that he was ordered to occupy. But of course, he couldn't just talk to Meade about it, and instead marched off like a doofus to his (leg's) doom.

He was a big-shot Democratic Congressman representing New York City. He was basically given the command because he wanted it and the administration hoped it would garner support for the war effort.

I believe that most of them truly believe that they are not doing it for Trump, and that he will die before the intraparty reckoning that has been looming since 2016 comes to a head. They keep losing those rolls of the dice, but are too committed to the plan to hold up or back out now.

Act as the appellate court for federal-level disputes (notably between states). But yeah, judicial originalism is pretty clearly just a red herring distracting from what the conservative judicial appointees want to accomplish.
