I was raised by unhappy ambitious people; I emerged whimsical/ambitious. I cry over dead pets for decades. I care, yet I’m aloof. My art/writing reflect all this.

I’m rewatching House of Dragons, season 1. There are so many things right with it: world-building, family history, the quest for power, the tendency toward betrayal, plot. But the characters age greatly in subsequent episodes and are hard to keep straight. And most characters don’t evoke empathy.

I just tried reading a humorous satire. The author has great writing skills, but an adolescent sense of humor, poor pacing and a sniveling, unlikeable main character. A big DNF from me. Now the dilemma: If I leave him a 1⭐️ review, I risk having him retaliate on one of my books. 1/2

That does get annoying very quickly. I follow writers on another site who drop ten posts a day and never interact on my page. 🤷🏻‍♀️ And many of their posts are meaningless pleas for attention. But I feel like an ogre for bristling over dozens of posts that say, “Good morning!”

2/2 One said she blocked everyone she didn’t feel rapport with. (Everyone?!) Many block people they could have simply unfollowed. Some will block if they see a common innocuous word or phrase they don’t like, for example posting “this ⬆️” to agree with the comment above.

I asked people what trivial reasons drove them to unfollow/block someone; e.g.: I balked over following a guy with the same first name of a bf who cheated on me, but followed him anyway. Another guy posted closeups of gross things. But some of their reasons struck me as strange or over the top. 1/2

Other cultures become less “other” when we read, write, film and document them. I read to my children about the Choctaw, Seminole and Inca to help them appreciate their roots, even though we did not grow up in those cultures. If I can’t live among them, I can still embrace them. #indigenous

When you look white, but have indigenous ancestry, you’re afraid that indigenous people will not believe you or accept you. Why should they? I am extremely pale. But my mother would point out that I had high cheekbones, a square jaw and straight hair. Yet people in Santa Fe shunned me. That hurt.

When you look white but have indigenous ancestry, you view western TV series and movies in a completely different way. Why are the settlers terrified of the “Indians” and why is John Wayne the “good guy?” Wouldn’t both sides be terrified of conflict? Wouldn’t both sides feel anger?
