Right. But a lot of the work being done to assure the safety of the toy is still being done by the manufacturer, and (though I've never worked for a toy manufacturer) I suspect that fear of the CPSC is only one of the things that encourages it to keep its toys safe.

I don't want to be read as if I'm for this, which I'm absolutely not. But when I buy a toy for my kids I don't know that it's safe, and I'm trusting the manufacturer, with some very limited oversight from the CPSC, to have made it safely. It's hardly a perfect guarantee under any circumstances.

That seems like an example of a problem that the market would have solutions for - we would all be a lot more careful about buying things for our kids - but the cost, namely lots more dead kids, is far too high to allow that.

To be clear, I am hardly anti-regulation. But I think about something like energy generation, where a lot of incentives and investments (in large part by governments, to be clear) have gotten us to a point where cleaner ways of generating power are now generally cheaper than dirtier ways.

I think Kamala Harris is great, an asset to the Biden/Harris ticket. and is extremely accomplished. That she has gotten her last four jobs through competitive elections was exactly my joke.
