Op-ed discourse would be improved by not publishing submissions by lawyers unless they are professional politicians.

Of course. IF by originalist you mean one who longs for the state of nature as known in the 18th century. Or is he a libertarian. Oops. Social Darwinist. This law talk is hilarious.

Perhaps he should take a meeting with Jack Goldsmith.

You realize that you are suggesting being reflective while you point to situations arising in the midst of armed, genocidal, conflict. I think that line is in sight.

Perhaps you should look to Jack Goldsmith for reassurance. Monday morning was the night of November 8, 2016 relived and enhanced.

Roberts, in his sanctimonious and disingenuous mockery of those who protest his savagery, is the most sadistic of an evil lot. I think of Huysman’s depiction of Gilles de Rais. His role in our society is as the leader of a Revolutionary Guard imposing values rejected by 70% of the citizenry.

I do not recall his senility being prominent in major news coverage. I remember thinking it was wildly under reported. He was also the candidate of the oligarchs. So this friendly reminder offers little comfort.

You have to wonder how these “left wing academics” forget the racist part. Or am I missing something essential?

Gotta love his focus on Dems' "defeat" and needing to "win over voters". He's talking about a party that has lost the popular vote ONCE since 1988 & represents 40 million more Americans in the US Senate despite getting a bare majority. It's amazing how blind we get to the real rigged system

Over 60 million of our fellow citizens voted for him. I am certain that many of them admire him. I fear you have an unrealistic notion of the grandeur of humankind. I say that with grief and resignation. It is not weakness of intellect that informs their judgement. Stay well in any case.

I must be an old square. I have never laughed at anything he said. Can I see that another person might find him funny? Sure. Can I see that another person might find him admirable? You betcha. Is he admirable? If not, why not? I know. He appeals to the asshole in all is us.

That is a distinction without a difference unless you think the judiciary was previously serving, in some of its predations, the interests of lumpen bigotry alone.

Been here since the 60’s. Lots of choices in almost any cuisine. Stopped “fine dining” a few years ago so that end of the spectrum is a mystery now. Try happy hours to get taste of what’s around. Try Amelie, Crave Fish Bar. Be a flanneur who eats.

I’ve read your 2020 piece on Baseball and Willie daily this week. I’m back to the heart of my childhood. Thank you so much. I lost baseball when Stoneham took the team from the Polo Grounds. I had a rain check I never used that last season. Used to walk from home past the stadium to 155 street.

Chances are it is the result of an intuitive calculation that there will be few consequences they could not themselves circumvent with their assets. As for the basic people and the less than serious people….not their concern.

When Horace Stoneham took Willie to San Francisco he took baseball out of my life forever. I am, once more, a very sad kid. The first person I loved outside my family. Posnanski’s piece in the Times says it all. There was Willie Mays and then everybody else.

He was not an entertainer his whole life. I’ve lived in New York 81 years . I know his families segregated buildings in Brooklyn, I worked with the mother of one of the Central Park Five. He was not funny. He was, and remains monster. He exploits, extorts, bullies, and lies as others breath.

Probably agree on enough. I think it’s more complicated. Bush was installed on office not elected. He was reelected because we were in a war his handlers started fraudulently. Trump was elected as a consequence of a number of manipulations, some long in creation some (Comey) last minute.

The mother wasn’t funny in the 70’s, not in the 80’s, nor in the 90’s. He was on TV for the same reason Naked and Afraid and Home Shopping Network is on TV. You are hilarious.

I didn’t mean he tries to be funny. I didn’t mean he has a sense of humor. But as one of mother nature’s creatures wandering the earth he is a flamboyant joke. She is the comedian. Also something of a sadist.

To tell the truth I never lived or went to school with rich kids. I only know them by their deeds as adults. And it seems bigger than school day bullying. But I have little doubt that our hopes don’t much differ so cheers.

Do it every day. Still, I don’t remember asserting there were no funny assholes. But to get back to the point. How would you assess a person who voted for a candidate because they found him funny? Cynical me would doubt that was the real reason. Earnest me lacks the detachment to be amused.

Do you actually laugh about it? Do you find it amusing? You must be young enough to believe you will see things get better in your lifetime. Also. Are all his targets assholes? And is that really his essential character or is that the childhood niche you are comfortable placing him in?

Sure. Used to have a some funny one liners. Who hasn’t? What I mean is that his “humorous” utterances appeal to the low life in all of us. He has never been funny. A good number of the sets in comedy clubs are not at all funny. Doesn’t mean people don’t laugh.

Says a lot about your sense of humor. And begs the question of whether you thought he was kidding. Of course, I never watched his paid performances or read his works, so maybe I missed the golden age of comedy. I just savored the stuff he served up as a public figure.
