Snarky history. Hideous French battleships. Handcrafted nonsense.

There's only about thirty people on BlueSky that will get the reference and be amused by it, and I love every single one of you

Don't think anybody really knows! That they let it roll over a second time suggests the Iranians certainly don't!

Yeah, but with the images of it partially gone over in the original incident it didn't really feel like the reason here. It goes despite (I think) having ropes ashore. I might be wrong on that though.

Yeah, and also how it behaves at low angles of inclination might be very different to what it wants to do when there's a proper lean on. The French predreads lost any righting arm at all surprisingly early, for example, but were thought to be perfectly stable as gunnery platforms.

The dit appears to be that it flooded through the stern tube after work on the propellor shaft. Where the water went next is an interesting question - if it could flood asymmetrically then yes, that's part of your answer, but raises question about lack of counter-flooding and also why it went twice.

Stability curve, basically. Measures how much a ship is trying to get back upright as the angle of lean increases, and if it goes zero congratulations - your ship now really wants to be upside down

You could probably take off some of the weight that's been added, and even remove original systems, but at this point it's looking like they've tried to squeeze too much into too small a hull. Might be far more efficient to start again, tbh.

It's immaterial that it's managed to cross the Atlantic. Getting away with it once - or even many times - doesn't necessarily mean all is well. One was already lost in a dry dock (which again appears to have been flooding leading to capsize) - they're clearly not blessed with reserves of stability.

I enjoyed this one, from the maritime museum in Amsterdam. There's Rochester, lower right, with the castle and cathedral. Dutch fleet giving Upnor Castle a kicking on the left. But what is this majestic mountain range? Apparently to someone from Holland, Bluebell Hill looks like the Hindu Kush.

Apparently one of the great joys about NATO exercises is being invited for everybody else's celebration of that one time they absolutely stomped you, and of course inviting them back in your turn.

Officially the problem is flooding through a stern tube after prop shaft repair/maintenance. Pretty sure that's still not meant to result in this. That they can't get on top of it in port, knowing what's happened, with time to plan and all the kit, suggests no chance if it happened at sea.

Second time in about 24 hours for IRIS Sahand here; one of its sister ships went over in a similar fashion a couple of years ago and another one - yes, I'd have stopped building them too - attempted to enter port via the breakwater with predictable results.

Update on that Iranian frigate - they got a heavy lift crane, cranked it back upright, and then forgot to do anything about that pesky balance issue. It's currently upside down again.

Yup, I regret to report that Iran's Moudge-class is at it again. This time it's IRIS Sahand that's experiencing verticality in a manner upsetting to its crew. Apparently it recently had a fair bit of top weight added, and it appears gravity took a view on that...

Hmm. They've not pledged not to, either - this is like all those taxes the tories said they hadn't promised not to introduce. See what happens. (More likely, increasing the range of ID is done by fiat rather than having to tie up parliament repealing the thing, so easier to achieve quickly)

That certainly seems to have been the case. But to say there was nothing of a civilian nature up north is a bit too simplistic. Also the number of villas etc decline well before what could reasonably be called frontier areas, so something else going on too.

And let's not forget IRIS Damavand, which at least managed to float upright until such time as some berk parked it on a breakwater. It'd be a bit of an insult to call them a brown-water navy, but at times like this one wonders. It's certainly a brown trouser moment.

Previous ships in the class include Talaieh, which didn't even manage to make it out of the drydock before filling itself with the ultimate in fire suppression systems. It's now being rebuilt under a new name: Shiraz. Apparently because every time it gets mentioned the admiral has a little whine.

LOOK AT HER. LOOK AT HER BLUESKY! Clearly based on the U Class, but adapted for Baltic ops. That's an icebreaker bow (which makes her lines filth af) and she's rigged for minelaying above and below, hence the sidepods. Her tail is pure U though. I would marry this boat. She is utterly gorgeous.
