If you've never watched Geraldo Rivera's 1988 special *Devil Worship* you should. It remains a fascinating example of the Satanic Panic that was rampant in the USA at the time.

I love this series of photographs of the magician John Nevil Maskelyne that expose how spirit cabinets operate. Or at least, how fake mediums produced their phenomena in them. These performances were popularised by acts like the Davenport Brothers.

We all need to be making more of this situation at Philadelphia's University of the Arts. It is not okay to close an entire institution.
Studying the arts matters! The aggressive attack on the arts must stop. Life without them will suck!

Much like Mrs. Guppy's performances, Herne and Williams' seances also featured a lot of spirit apport phenomena.

This is an image of the German magician Hans Joachim Jacob Harms (aka Jacoby-Harms). He's staring at a materialised floating spirit hand. There's a levitating skull behind him. It was used to demonstrate an example of a fake but realistic-looking spirit photograph.

This is a painting by the Victorian spiritualist and artist Georgiana Houghton. This particular painting was made in 1862. The face is said to be Jesus. Angels also feature often in her works. Houghton produced many of her paintings under the influence of a spirit named Lenny.

Emma Hardinge Britten was a leading spiritualist in the 19thC. She was famed for her "trance lectures." This spirit photo with her was taken in 1860 by Wm Mumler. Interesting aside, it's very rare to see teeth in 19thC photos.

I'm in love with this portrait of Ichabod Crane being chased by the Headless Horseman. It was painted by John Quidor in 1858. Quidor was a big fan of Washington Irving's work and created several portraits based on Irving's stories including The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle.

Happy Valentine's Day! Here's a fun Victorian card with a poem:
I'm not attracted by your glitter

My life would be if I should take
You for my spouse, a rattlesnake
Oh no, I'd not accept the ring
Or evermore 'twould prove a sting

It's Charles Dickens' birthday today. Although he wrote many great works, let's not forget that he wrote one of the most famous Victorian ghost stories: A Christmas Carol (1843). It was released before the rise of spiritualism - a nice reminder of the longer history of spirits.
