My best experience was last year, visiting the Statue of Liberty for the first time. The crowd there was a rainbow of colors, speaking dozens of different languages. I was also able to view the immigration records of both my Mom and Dad. THAT was a great way to celebrate the Fourth.

Reminds me of one of my favorite George Clooney lines from "O Brother, Where Art Thou?": "Well, ain't this place a geographical oddity. Two weeks from everywhere!"

And all year. All decade. For as long as it takes to start reversing this clearly BS legal reasoning.

Came here for this. Plus, Robert Eggers has such a unique approach with all of his films.

RIP Donald Sutherland. It makes me so sad, but also has me remembering so many fine little moments: The plaintive "this is my job" in "Animal House"; the nightmare fuel shriek at the end of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers"; the Kate Bush "Cloudbusting" video; just to name a few. 💔

Yep. I never actually had the app to begin with (prefer to limit the number of apps I use and don't like the invasive nature of many). I'd regularly check Twitter until a few months ago but don't miss it at all now (and on the rare times I do check, my DMs are garbage). Bluesky is so much better.

Started reading "Caste" - Isabel Wilkerson has a unique and very thoughtful writing style. It's compelling.

Looking for non-fiction book recommendations, especially history/politics (I recently finished Timothy Snyder's "The Road to Unfreedom"). What's everyone reading?

That quote just blows my mind... it's sheer hubris. Right up there with the Bush-era quote about the "reality-based community."

I know people who use YouTube for almost all research for trips, diet, school assignments, etc. The result, more often than not, is confusing and often contradictory impressions - not a real understanding of anything. It's mostly vibes. Give me a written answer I can interrogate for further details.

Love this: "Most contemporary recordings are so compressed and optimized they might as well have been recorded in orbit around a distant planet, but with Albini’s, you’re right in the room, experiencing the music in the instant it comes into existence. In that moment, there’s nothing better."

I found WaPo's headline to this story weak and clickbaity. Instead of saying something like "Trump to oil execs: Give me $1 billion and I'll kill climate efforts," it uses a "one weird trick" phrasing:

What a horrifying shock - just awful to hear. I've followed Albini's career since we were at Northwestern together, and he's contributed so much to the art and music world, and to the world in general. My condolences to all his family, friends and colleagues. 😭

That is such an excellent description: "indestructible credulity." The other side, meanwhile, is consigned to being perpetually dismissed.

Geysir is a great stop, with nice amenities, including an extensive cafe. It's also near Fludir, which has the Secret Lagoon. Not nearly as luxurious (or expensive) as the Blue Lagoon, but the water is wonderfully toasty and relaxing.

The diving spot is in Thingvellir National Park, where you can easily spend a full day exploring: waterfalls, huge lake, amazing vistas, rift between continents and more. Even if you don't dive at Silfra, it's fascinating to watch the divers prep for a journey into that icy water.

Did you see John Oliver's recent "Last Week Tonight" show about student debt? It was excellent, and featured several stories about people who have been devastated by the genuinely Kafka-esque nature of the student loan program as it's currently abused by the commercial loan management companies.

That's a brilliant description: "contrarianism as an ideology." I think it functions as a partner to @jayrosen.bsky.social's "view from nowhere." Both take a stand - that of not taking a stand. And both damage journalism and democracy while their proponents say, "Wasn't me. I'm on no one's side."

Really a disturbing trend. "On the Media" reported a similar case not long ago involving the now-shuttered Apple Daily in Hong Kong, which has since been acquired by a Serbian entrepreneur and populated with AI-generated content: open.spotify.com/episode/3qEt...
