I know people who use YouTube for almost all research for trips, diet, school assignments, etc. The result, more often than not, is confusing and often contradictory impressions - not a real understanding of anything. It's mostly vibes. Give me a written answer I can interrogate for further details.

Love this: "Most contemporary recordings are so compressed and optimized they might as well have been recorded in orbit around a distant planet, but with Albini’s, you’re right in the room, experiencing the music in the instant it comes into existence. In that moment, there’s nothing better."

I found WaPo's headline to this story weak and clickbaity. Instead of saying something like "Trump to oil execs: Give me $1 billion and I'll kill climate efforts," it uses a "one weird trick" phrasing:

As much as I love "Amadeus," Ridley Scott's "The Duellists" is arguably the most awesome beef movie ever made.

OMG, this is so good and well researched. I laughed out loud at the digging you did when investigating the Google Docs editing history that AdVon offered as evidence of having a human writer:

What a horrifying shock - just awful to hear. I've followed Albini's career since we were at Northwestern together, and he's contributed so much to the art and music world, and to the world in general. My condolences to all his family, friends and colleagues. 😭

Oh, it might not be *good* but I find it's still good fun.

That is such an excellent description: "indestructible credulity." The other side, meanwhile, is consigned to being perpetually dismissed.

"Broadcast News," of course. Also "His Girl Friday" and "State of Play." I'd also make an edge case for "Frost/Nixon."

Geysir is a great stop, with nice amenities, including an extensive cafe. It's also near Fludir, which has the Secret Lagoon. Not nearly as luxurious (or expensive) as the Blue Lagoon, but the water is wonderfully toasty and relaxing.

The diving spot is in Thingvellir National Park, where you can easily spend a full day exploring: waterfalls, huge lake, amazing vistas, rift between continents and more. Even if you don't dive at Silfra, it's fascinating to watch the divers prep for a journey into that icy water.

Did you see John Oliver's recent "Last Week Tonight" show about student debt? It was excellent, and featured several stories about people who have been devastated by the genuinely Kafka-esque nature of the student loan program as it's currently abused by the commercial loan management companies.

Yes, I still check regularly but avoid posting. Yet somehow I keep gaining followers - really questionable ones with 7 or 8 followers and strings of numbers at the end of their usernames. Not at all suspicious /s

That's a brilliant description: "contrarianism as an ideology." I think it functions as a partner to @jayrosen.bsky.social's "view from nowhere." Both take a stand - that of not taking a stand. And both damage journalism and democracy while their proponents say, "Wasn't me. I'm on no one's side."

Really a disturbing trend. "On the Media" reported a similar case not long ago involving the now-shuttered Apple Daily in Hong Kong, which has since been acquired by a Serbian entrepreneur and populated with AI-generated content: open.spotify.com/episode/3qEt...

Love this observation! "Broadcast News" has so many good lines, and this was definitely one of the most memorable.
