Are any of us capable of forming our own opinions based just on viewing the debate directly, without benefit of media analysis and pundits?

This argument that 'if you have a problem with Biden it means you're a Trump supporter' is an extremely dumb syllogism.

Thinking that you are fully objective and that everyone else is an agency-less media sponge incapable of forming their own opinions is a common conceit, and also a sign that you should go outside and touch grass. For someone who's running as a candidate for the first time this is a bad look.

He did that kind of thing several times in the debate and it didn't bother me at all, word slips and especially number slips or rhyming word slips are a normal mistake that even pre broadcasters make regularly.
It was the completely-losing-his-train-of-thought part that startled me.

Nobody is polling much worse than him either, and that's without any campaigning, which would obviously change.

It's not entirely about media vibes. I'm sorry, but this is a coping story Biden fans have been telling themselves for the last week, and indeed longer. People hate saying their own team has made mistakes, it's a natural human impulse to look for external scapegoats, but often a misguided one.

He hands it off to Harris or lets a few of them vie for the votes of the convention, I don't know enough about the inner workings of the Democratic party to predict what they'll decide to do.

THANK YOU
They've been so comfortable with the '2 party system' and having the GOP as a foil that they've failed for many years to recognize what was going on with it.

He set the debate up as a high stakes sparring match himself, and it's nobody else's fault that he lost track of what he was talking about mid-sentence about 5 minutes in. He wasn't interrupted. Frankly I'm staggered that today he says he hasn't even watched it back.

A teleprompted speech with a cheering crowd isn't the same as an unscripted debate on live TV. I do not pay attention to stage managed events.
I do want a candidate that I'm reasonably confident can beat Trump and serve a full term, possibly dealing with a large scale domestic insurrection.

This is simply not true. I was surprised how little Trump did that, in fact. Most of the debate video is split screen and you can see that Biden messed up without any interruptions at all.

They all came out on message last week but the fact is that the message is at odds with visible reality. Biden himself set the debate up as a showdown with Trump, and forgot what he was talking about in the middle of a sentence only a few minutes in. I believe it's unreasonable to overlook this.

That works in the GOP because the GOP has become an apocalyptic death cult

This is just a file photo from 2021. I'm not sure why they used it, probably because there are not that many photos of Warner and Biden.

I did not consult the NYT before forming my own opinion and I really do not care how you feel about them, since I have no plans to take up reading it.

I absolutely think he's incapable. I think you're mistaking politeness for perfidy.

It's absolutely possible if that's the outcome potential contenders want. If they can't agree, then they can just back Harris and trade horses in the usual fashion.
Again I am not an NYT reader or a reader of op-eds in general so I don't know what you are trying to convince me of here.

My go-to example of Dems saying they were going to do something and then quietly abandoning it, only to express shock and surprise when things later get worse:

People within the Democratic party, specifically members of Congress and sitting governors. I don't read the NYT other than the occasional news story (ie I don't normally looka t the front page of their website) and I don't read op-eds at all.

Why would it? They agree not to attack each other publicly and for the lowest scorer in each round at the convention to drop out so all voting gets done in an afternoon, winner takes #2 as VP.
I'm open to just handing it over to Harris but a contest is easily manageable if that's what people want.

I am not really here for the nostalgia stuff. I watched it but it's basically a safe space event. I will pay more attention to his interview tonight where he has respond to (I assume) some difficult or challenging questions.

Harris has a lot of negatives and is not a great communicator, and the Trump campaign definitely has a plan for how to run against her.
I don't mind if she is the nominee but I'm sure these are factors in the minds of experienced sitting politicians.

Dems (esp. Biden) are imho having a hard time putting court reform front and center because they never acted after setting up a Presidential commission on SCOTUS reform in 2021 that dropped its report the same year.
2.5 years just pissed away.

Oh, I watched it. My heart soared when Biden proclaimed 'We'll beat Donald Trump. We'll beat him again in 2020.' (After a pause he corrected himself and said 2024.)
I don't give a whole lot of weight to teleprompter performances. I will watch the ABC interview tonight. I'm not panicked, just blunt.

Will, you're not old or experienced enough to lecture anyone about being 'panicked.' But as a well-educated young man, you should be aware of basic strategy.
Biden asked for the fight and sold himself as a tough-guy candidate. He blew it. That's just how it is.

This would work if the charges were Treason, but bear in mind that that's something different from insurrection.
'levying war' is generally construed to mean organizing recruits into troops and taking military action.

Harris, Newsom, Whitmer, to name but 3 (alphabetical order)
Of course you are never going to have a baggage free candidate who cannot be criticized, such an animal doesn't exist.
OTOH Biden (on stage rn) is saying things like "I'Il beat Donald Trump. I'll beat him again in 2020." 🤷

He'll be very welcome as long as he's serving their agenda, if he's sending the national guard or state cops out to round up people they don't like

Strangely missing from the story is the fact that he's tied or has a slight lead in polls, so there's a decent chance this guy commands North Carolina's National Guard and state police in 6 months.

My understanding is that most companies these days do call cellphones etc., but apparently only 1 person in ~100 picks up and agrees to participate, so they're probably oversampling certain types of people.
