I have Adulted so much in the last week (beyond even regular work-Adulting!): car maintenance, dentist, eye doctor (new glasses for new progressive lenses, sigh), mail-in diagnostic test, new driver's license, end of year teacher presents. With a stupidly self-injured finger. Can I go nap? [flomp]

We sometimes see the baby ammocetes in the San Francisco estuary! They're at the cute-snoot filter feeder stage then.

Ohhh so envious! I got to see babies in Raritan Bay one summer - looked like a lot of cute soup spoons with legs heading out to sea!

It was such a great headline, I immediately checked to see if it was by @sabs.bsky.social, who has written some stunners!

I mean, I know folks who've faked a "little death" to end an encounter, but this is some serious ghosting.

(Also, are there exceptions to every single one of the above? Of course. The greatest hit of all in ecology, "Well, It Depends (feat. Variability and Stochasticity)"

Hi, I'm an ecologist who studies invasive aquatic invertebrates! My greatest hits include "There Are Too Many To Remove All Of Them (That's Why It's Invasive)", "No, People Can't Or Don't Eat It", and "No, Nothing Else Eats it Either In Any Real Quantity (That's Why It's Invasive Remix)".

I know folks who just found an eel in the upper San Francisco Estuary in California, which is also pretty unusual!

Since I have children of a certain age, my brain immediately set "Did you know eels can live in Kansas?" to "Do you want to build a snowman?" from Frozen.

The thread this comment is on references Google AI's recommendation of glue as a pizza topping. GIGO is a term that refers to a computer science/coding concept of "Garbage in, garbage out", i.e. if you give AI a training set full of bad ideas, it will only generate bad ideas, e.g. glue on pizza.

My brain read GIGO as "glue in, glue out" before I remembered the more accepted version.

A couple my husband took of a very fine and fuzzy male Valley Carpenter Bee, Xylocopa sonorina, on a cornflower in our front yard. #InverteFest

And seeing the notes below about which syllables are stressed, I like 312 too. (Have named 2 kids with 19th century first and middle names, using short nicknames, continue to like that pattern.)

Some people do? They get between pistachio and walnut sized, so small-but-big-enough-for-soup. But they also are sponges that accumulate mercury, and pesticides, and harmful algal bloom toxins, so... maybe not the best idea in quantity.

There are many! They eat lots of phytoplankton! That means less zooplankton! Guess what lots of native fish eat! But, at least we don't have zebra mussels yet?

Literally coming back home from work on invasive freshwater clams on the Sacramento River while reading this. As a state scientist, yeah, this looks about right.
