All of these apply to everyone, obviously -- I got multiple replies that were "just treat your women mentees like you'd treat any other mentee" -- but also..."that's the hard part, isn't it?" Hope you find these helpful -- what other advice would you add?

5. Make connections for them. Meet up at a convention and introduce them to other designers. Get them hooked into peer groups online.

4. Ask them what a successful mentorship relationship would look like for them. "When our mentorship wraps up, what does success look like for you?"

3. The mentor/mentee relationship itself can establish an authority structure. Emphasize the peer nature of the relationship as much as possible. The mentees themselves also have valuable experience and viewpoints. This is, after all, their project, and they have final decision-making power.

1. Ask questions before telling folks what to do. 2. Assume they're smart. For example, instead of saying "you should...", ask: "have you considered x..." "what are you thinking about x..." "how do you envision x..."

Board game design (and general) mentorship advice: I know a middle-aged dude assigned to mentor two young women designing games. He thoughtfully asked if I had any advice, wondering about blind spots. I posed his Q to a group of women and I thought they had some really good advice. ๐Ÿงต๐Ÿ‘‡ ๐ŸŽฒโœ‚๏ธ

What was most surprising to me about these game designs was that roll-and-move was their default starting point, even though I have never seen these kids play a roll-and-move game -- and have seen them play many other types of games. It's like it's hard-wired somehow.

I just received this picture of Undergrove out in the wild! KS copies will be delivering soon. It will be at Gen Con, then retail release in September. (this pic is one of my pre-release copies, with some friends on vacation.)

10. Across multiple presentations and conversations it is really hitting me how pervasive AI is going to be in toys and entertainment in a few years. Everyone is just waving their hands at the massive electricity use (and plagiarism). The robot uprising may win just by cooking the planet.

As of right now we are directing folks with questions about manufacturing to GAMA - we are trying to spend our bandwidth on stuff that applies more specifically to the design side.

What would you want to see next?

I saw your game! I'm feeling vastly outnumbered by video games. 75% of the session titles feel totally uninteresting to me. But the ones I've gone to have all had something to them.

6+. Kolek et al "Video Games and Attitude Change" argues that 1st person games don't build empathy for the character you're playing. Instead, they build empathy for *other* characters that you interact with. (This is my summary of Sam Liberty's summary in a talk, much prob lost in translation here)

I also heard about Free Rice which I think is similar- they started out ad funded but now have private donors. Which makes me think it's not really generating new funding - surely these donors are not only willing to give if people play the game.

Walk this morning then lunch at a restaurant that I rarely go to. Remembered only after getting there that this is where my now-spouse accidentally proposed 20+ yrs ago by saying "so after we get married..." It was sure to happen, we just hadn't fully said it yet. Never needed more of a proposal.

I haven't looked that closely at this game but at first glance it doesn't bother me, which might surprise people. Some factors: A) designer is a dancer B) most minis are in power poses, not weird contorted t&a bullshit C) lack of clothing is appropriate to the scenario

Ive had (b) happen in my forums, if it makes you feel any better about the chances that it was personal. That said, your hyper vigilance is not wrong - my first read was that it was personal. Now it is in an unknowable black box. Schroedinger's transphobia.

This is presumably on a page with your (very feminine) name in it so this is either a) someone who's been following you enough to know your backstory and is choosing to misgender you Or b) someone who assumes all designers are male? Impossible to tell, both suck, neither way is it funny.

The series Lupin on Netflix is SO GOOD. Generally one heist per episode, often told by actually showing the heist first -- but in a way where things are not what they seem, so then the episode unfolds what really happened.
