I haven't seen anyone recommend Matt Ruff in this thread yet. Probably best known for Lovecraft Country, which is occasionally very funny, but some of his earlier stuff is also hilarious. Sewer, Gas, & Electric especially.

I went with a block instead, but this really is example one million of bigots who can't help but describe trans people in a way that makes them out to be almost impossibly cool.

Tough call. On the one hand, this is massively wasteful, but on the other, the fatal accident rate of civilian helicopters is at least 17 times greater than that of cars.

The best case they can come up with for AI is that it can do some of the work that they could pay a human to do, but while VCs are still flushing money down that particular toilet, it's a bit cheaper than people, and the only downside is that it sets the planet on fire and doesn't work.

He was also a time traveler who put the second pyramid on top of the first nearly forty years before the first was built. Truly, the man lived a life.

Every time I think of The Postman, I remember Nathan Rabin's My Year of Flops review, and especially the quote in it from David Brin, the author of the book.

Somewhere, there is an alternate universe where Ill Harvest is a pretty solid Beastie Boys concept album about the development of agriculture. I hope it's the same alternate universe where they released The Illiad, about the fall of Troy.

I have a vague memory that's stuck with me for years of an interview Ice T did on I think Conan, where he was shown that photograph, and said something like, "Do you know what they paid me to do that movie? A million dollars. I will do ANYTHING for a million dollars."

1. Biden no longer wears pants. It's balls out from now on. 2. Wherever Clarence Thomas parks his motor coach, Biden is there, slashing his tires and keying the paint. 3. Every morning, one justice gets a steaming bowl of shit fresh from the President thrown through their bedroom window.

Isn’t the point of all this that the law no longer matters if the president is immune from prosecution?

In his official capacity as commander in chief of the US military, I imagine he has the power to simply order a drone strike on the homes of the justices.

There are already a lot of strong contenders in this thread. But I'll throw in this one: "There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it." - C.S. Lewis, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

I used to know the difference between kickers and plats, between a cob nobbler and a dish, and that marked me as better than the lamestains, a real hoopy frood who knows where his towels at. And now those moments are lost in time, like tears in rain. Christ, what an asshole.

But the goal wasn't education and engagement. It was forcing the university administration to divest. I'm completely agree about the value of libraries, but this wasn't an attack on the library, and much of the damage came from attempts to build barricades to keep people inside safe.

Battlestar Galactica always feels weird to me because on the one hand it seems very much of the prestige TV era, but then you watch the episodes and they'll have a cut where someone repeats a line twice in a row because they had to remind people what happened before the ten minutes of commercials.

Maybe this is ahistorical or wrong, but it seems like for a while ad-tech promised companies they could deliver ads of higher quality, by more accurately targeting the people most likely to spend money, but that was mostly bullshit, so we're now seeing those same assholes piling quantity on top.

I too prefer the commandments of the Eagles: Take it easy Don't let the sound of your own wheels make you crazy Take it to the limit Take another shot of courage Don't you draw the queen of diamonds Come down from your fences Look at the way that we live Lay down your law books now

It's none of the above. The version specified in the law was created by the Fraternal Order of Eagles in the 1950s and later became the text used by Cecil B. DeMille in monuments used to promote his movie, The Ten Commandments.

There was a bookstore in Massachusetts, near where I grew up, called Tatnuck (still exists, I think), and as I recall, their whole thing was that they'd find a way to get you just about anything, and always ordered two copies: one for you, one for the store. So they always had a very fun selection.

That's true, but this is just one part of a larger surveillance system. Given the incredibly long and thorough history of law enforcement abuse of that system, there is zero reason to think they won't abuse this. Thousands of cameras covering vast swaths of public space is actually not great!

I get that they work to reduce speeding, and I agree that that's a good thing. It's also great to reduce interactions with armed cops. But I still can't get behind a system that involves constant surveillance of everything all the time.

If you two ever do a podcast again, for literally any show, I will watch the show just for the podcast. I still tell people about how great Citadel Dropouts was. Gold standard for a podcast about a show, and it almost made the last season worth it.

You’re right that there is a distinction in that taking the kids was mostly a way to punish parents. But the US locks up a hell of a lot of kids, and it’s both brutally punitive and wildly ineffective at reducing harm. We are a country that loves putting people in cages, and a lot of them are kids.

The US government and all the state governments have pretty much always taken kids from their parents and put them in camps. Tens of thousands of incarcerated children. The outrage should never end.

Just saw this tip recently: At least on an iPhone (and maybe android too, I don't know), you can take photos of your own bookshelves and then search for text. So if you kept, for instance, a photo of each shelf, you could pretty easily narrow down where to look.

There are so many sins of the educated class that it would make a pretty solid book. One of those 1000 page tomes with 300 pages of footnotes and appendices. But David Brooks would have to be one of the least qualified people alive to write it.

My guess is they can do that because they own IMDB, which I think starts at like 400k a year. That's a drop in the bucket for streaming services, but they're not likely to spend it just to make the service better. They'll put in ads raise your rates instead.

They're not even reading the surviving exemplar. They're reading, like, "Feel Nothing: Business Powered by the Ancient Wisdom of the Stoics" or "Feel Everything: Epicureans at the Negotiating Table." Or, maybe even more likely, a blog or a tweet about those books.
