There was a lot of food under and around it, cigarette ash, and it smelt so so strongly of cigarettes. So I couldn't sleep in it 🫀 I am glad I have done so many talks in the last few years, if I was still a less confident PhD student it would've ruined it for me completely 😭

I somehow kept it together on 4 hours of bad sleep on the floor + a big coffee. It was pretty stressful πŸ˜… but the slides were similar to talks I've done before, so I survived

Happy birthday! πŸŽ‚ Leavitt's work on variable stars was absolutely foundational to much of modern cosmology and distance measurement.

It's only on Mac for now 😭 I'm curious to see what you think, though! VS Code has broken in a new and exciting way pretty much every single time it updates as of late... that + Microsoft's very meh approach to FOSS make me want an alternative.

Now hearing about star formation regions in the solar neighbourhood from Ronan Kerr! #EAS2024 πŸ”

Our galaxy is full of huge star formation regions that can be traced and studied in exquisite detail thanks to the Gaia satellite!

Sound engineering! I did it much more in undergrad, but I mixed a lot of shows and bands. Now I mostly just mix recorded stuff whenever the opportunity comes along. I really like it because it can be super analytical and technical (like science), but the best tool you have is just your own ears.

Pompeii is great! I went there on a school trip in 2010, and it was such a cool place with history basically being frozen. See also Herculaneum, which is closer to Naples and smaller but much better preserved

Vesuvius has been very well behaved for the last 2000 years or so, making it a great choice to visit if you're near Naples! Only a very small chance of erupting if you go to the summit πŸ˜…

From Alexandra Masegian: Gaia’s fourth data release won’t be publicly available until the end of 2025. Today’s paper reports a discovery from the preliminary data that was just too exciting to keep secret! πŸ”βœ¨οΈ

Sadly not - fuel is needed for it to maintain its orbit at L2, and it also needs fuel (though I think it uses cold gas?) to desaturate its reaction wheels sometimes too. They did a study and unfuelled operations just wouldn't be useful, as precise rotation is very important to how Gaia works.

The status of Gaia DR4 data processing #EAS2024 πŸ”

- Gaia proper motions will be ~4x better
- systematics in parallaxes are better controlled
- reducing systematics is really hard, but very important!
- it means DR4 release will not be before mid-2026, but they're trying very hard to keep it in 2026

Really excited about this paper! New, larger samples have made it possible to show that there is a statistically very significant correlation between bars and AGN in the local galaxy population. And stronger bars are more likely to host AGN. @izgarland.bsky.social led this excellent work! πŸ§ͺπŸ”

Yes! It's so cool (and quite under-rated in the wider public still.) The data it produces isn't as immediately shiny as e.g. Hubble data is, but it is huuuugely useful and revolutionary in its own way
