Historian of science and technology, thinks "artificial intelligence" is both an oxymoron and a pleonasm, possibly a panpsychist. Very occasionally posts longer mind-leavings on dettelblog.wordpress.com/.

The one advantage of the usage of the german s in 18th c. latin printed matter is that if you are text-searching for any inflection of a root that ends in a single s, you can find every inflection just by changing the s to an f.

I watched this jumping spider ambush this mosquito yesterday in my study. Go spider! This morning, spider is repeatedly, stealthily approaching the dead mosquito, and pouncing on it. Like a cat. I think it is playing.

Also, in its recursiveness and with its concluding reflection on its difference from Hollywood righteous (often courtroom) revelation stories, this narrative questions rather than reinforces the platonic idea that science corresponds to something “out there.”

This reads like an introduction to the history and philosophy of science. What does it mean to know? When do you know you know? What is the relationship between measurement/ observation and knowledge? Between data and explanation/ understanding? Asking and answering?

A great text. Quotes the too-infrequently quoted William James' letter to H. G. Wells (on the occasion of Maxim Gorky's visit to the US) decrying "the worship of the bitch-goddess, Success.”

It's everywhere, even at the liberalest of the liberal arts colleges. It's in the water. I was involved in getting Smith's new engineering program started. Someday, somewhere, science and engineering will be taught AS humanities, and v.v., not as hard and soft knowledge.

What is the goal of the collaboration? What is supposed to come out of it? I think the sciences have to learn to think of themselves as humanities and v.v. As researchers, we all have ways, more or less legitimate, for making matter speak, more or less convincingly. Short of that...?
