When someone says a movie has "some of the worst editing I've ever seen," what do they mean by that? Is it something you just have to see for yourself and understand intuitively, or is editing a craft that can be broken down and explained, taught to someone?

I can explain it with fight scenes - the more cuts, the more apparent it is they are trying to cover up the fact the star can’t fight. It can be exciting when used well but the “Bourne” effect feels sloppy

Yes, editing is a craft that can be broken down, explained and taught. However, even without that knowledge, bad editing can just "feel" wrong. Like reading a typo. A break in immersion can usually be ascribed to bad (or absent) editing.

Yeah, when you go to film school they teach you editing and it has a language like grammar. You can break the rules but you have to learn them first
