You know, I'm not a huge fan of Seth Abramson's writing, but he always seems to be able to back up whatever he says. And what he said today suggests that it was worse than a mere dereliction of duty.

It's 7 pm, and it's 94 degrees outside, and we don't have AC because it's not supposed to get this hot in the PNW, and I'm afraid my front porch geraniums are dying because I didn't think to water them a second time today until just now, and, yes, I had a Coke float for supper because it's too hot.

Even if they agreed she were legitimate, there are apparently a thousand other ways that the Convicted Felon and his allies could use the courts to tie up any replacement.

All the folks talking about replacing Biden - how many of them know how campaigns and elections and laws around political donations and such actually work? Jim Wright seems to understand the problems, and this essay from him is well worth reading. www.stonekettle.com/2024/07/ragg...

Again, Black people are an exception here, as basically anyone who stayed in the Jim Crow South has a living memory of living under what amounted to fascism, including the “always walking on eggshells/lack of social trust/long periods of boring endurance/randomized terrifying violence”

That seems like exactly the right strategy. That said, how can an ordinary person who isn't politically connected encourage that to happen?

The Democratic Party’s reaction to their candidate having a bad debate substantially outpaces the Republican Party’s reaction to their candidate being convicted of multiple felonies, held liable for rape, and owing judgments in the hundreds of millions for defamation and fraud.

Oh, wow. Until so very recently, it was standard to give kids tylenol when they got a vaccination. And just about everyone gave their kids tylenol for teething discomfort, or for earaches. If tylenol is indeed detrimental to the development of babies and young children, that is terrifying.

And the variants have changed a lot since the 2023-2024 version, so the earlier shot might not be as protective now. If we're careful through the summer, we can get the new shot when it comes out, then make sure to get it again in 6 months so we don't have this conundrum next time.

Given the 3-part question, maybe some people agreed if they agreed with any part of it? Or disagreed if they disagreed with any part of it? I think it's impossible to draw any conclusions based on the answers to this question, because it's impossible to know what the respondents were responding to.

Make dog treats! Slice the zucchini into circles (about 1/4" thick, or a bit more). Put the slices on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Stick the pan in the oven at about 150 degrees, and leave it until the slices are completely dry. Dogs love them! (You can do the same with sweet potatoes.)

Books designed to be read only by human eyes are different from books designed to be read by machines, which is why Google will tell you that the phrase “shake my booty” can be found in an 1863 English translation of Don Quixote.

They are! I was working on a captioning standards project at work when I first saw it, and the team had been talking about how to render unintelligible speech in captions. Sometimes "unintelligible" really is the best you can do. But this -- it's perfect. I love it so much!

That's brilliant. I've been working on a bit of historical fiction lately, and I've worried that, if I put the wrong food on the table, someone, somewhere would see the mistake and throw my book across the room. So I did a bunch of research, but I didn't think to use paintings.

I mostly stick with NPR, Heather Cox Richardson, and Beau of the Fifth Column. I'll add Washington Post and Talking Points Memo when I'm feeling up to it. Occasionally the BBC or the Guardian, if I feel like I need an outside-the-US take.

Pick your sources carefully. Choose sources that are calm and rational, that aren't playing to your emotions. Go for news you can read (or listen to) rather than watch. Choose sources that don't provide infinite scrolling - choose news that comes in chunks that have a beginning and an end.

I once spent a long weekend at a cabin about 100 miles from Seattle, at an elevation of 6000 feet. It was a new moon, and it wasn't just that we could see the Milky Way. The sky was so bright with stars that the starlight cast shadows. It was incredible.
