We live in a federal system in which most states are captive to a political party that openly embrace authoritarianism and is hostile to both the free press and oversight. The US in particular *needs* a robust freedom of speech to combat its government's hostility to it.

If you don't see how this thread is contrasting the US model and elsewhere (specifically the UK) you've missed the point. Not buying the exceptionalist take that the US is too political to have regulation, in all the same ways it's just too special to have the same policies that work elsewhere.
