What's really awful is that wonderful artists start something gorgeous and compelling, but it can't get any traction so they have to abandon it. So many masterpieces die after chapter one.

Basically, a SPAC is public company that doesn't do anything and is formed to raise funds to purchase a private company that does something. Why? Usually because the private company wants to go public without making a ton of disclosures to the SEC and investors. Because they have things to hide.

No, SCOTUS also ruled that anything that intersects official behavior is inadmissible in court as evidence (going way beyond any other form of immunity). So Hope Hicks testifying to his mens rea is retroactively grounds for a mistrial, even though none of the underlying behavior qualifies.

This story really gets to me. A Florida school board banned the book "Ban This Book" because it criticizes book banning. Obviously, this is a shameful attempt to combat accountability, but their reasoning is worse:

I write about manufacturing, which is largely not part of the AI boom despite having used generative technology based on ml algorithms for decades because no one is trying to wow each other with it. The use-cases are widely understood, and everyone is skeptical of companies promising the moon.

That's a symptom of something entirely different! CEOs want their bonuses, and to get that bonus they have 5-10 years to demonstrate that they've caused the business to grow. So they artificially create that impression through stock buybacks. This will inevitably cause a market crash

Saw a dude online this week saying dividends seem like a scam. He couldn't conceive of the idea that an investment should pay you back outside of selling it to someone else. He could only conceive of investments in terms of a bigger fool scam, and he was entirely on board.

Except they don't always work. Freedom of press has essentially been shut down in India, defamation standards in the UK are atrocious, Hungary and Russia both slid from democracies to dictatorships in my lifetime. There are dozens of countries where lack of free press has been a problem.

We live in a federal system in which most states are captive to a political party that openly embrace authoritarianism and is hostile to both the free press and oversight. The US in particular *needs* a robust freedom of speech to combat its government's hostility to it.
