The crisis in Gaza has revealed, among other things, that many Americans have no idea what is and is not protected speech. And also that many believe there should not be any consequences for civil disobedience, which makes me think a lot of folks haven’t read up on civil disobedience either.

Yes, and - a lot of people haven't considered what it means to carry out civil disobedience *in our day and age* - including people who scoff at those who worry about the risks.

There’s plenty of precedent for large scale movements that incorporated civil disobedience to quite justifiably pressure and shame those who sought to punish that civil disobedience into not doing so. There’s nothing wrong or ahistorical about that.
