I also didn't say there's no innovation. But a lot of the interesting stuff is probably not going to turn a profit, and cannot be outsourced. Things like the Voyager probes could be far more interesting now with modern cameras/sensors, but political impetus to ramp up those efforts is largely gone 😞

Everybody was poorer than 🇺🇲 in the 1960s because 🇺🇲 was the only major power that wasn't still recovering from WW2. The USSR was probably upper-middle of the pack for the time, and was capable of marshaling natural resources and human talent few other countries could because of its sheer size.
