They probably don't even have the critical faculties to recognize it. They see right/left as team sport, don't understand politics involves motivations and not simply preferences, and can't really do any type of serious social analysis because it depends on (actual or perceived) Marxist methods.

The thing about single-tracking is so galling. Basically making money by destroying their own infrastructure, making passenger rail impractical as an alternative to automobile dependency.

I think they should just let Hillary be the nominee. If we're just getting Trump back anyway, it's only fair that we all get another good belly laugh at her losing again.

I concur. Living standards metrics should matter way more than abstractions like how big your GDP is. But living standards can't very well be compressed into one number.

Whether ideology or luck, the area where they first fell far behind was probably more computing than classic engineering and it probably influenced all that came after.

I also didn't say there's no innovation. But a lot of the interesting stuff is probably not going to turn a profit, and cannot be outsourced. Things like the Voyager probes could be far more interesting now with modern cameras/sensors, but political impetus to ramp up those efforts is largely gone π

Everybody was poorer than πΊπ² in the 1960s because πΊπ² was the only major power that wasn't still recovering from WW2. The USSR was probably upper-middle of the pack for the time, and was capable of marshaling natural resources and human talent few other countries could because of its sheer size.

Arguably the ability to engineer like that is precisely a sign that it wasn't very poor.
And the USA losing its willingness to innovate in that field, which it had at one time, is a symptom of increasing impoverishment.

Though I wouldn't be very surprised if upstate NY would love a Democrat with actual socdem inclinations. I'm talking income support, single payer healthcare, welfare economics, public investment in infrastructure and r&d (besides weapons).
It's just that AOC isn't very interested in those things.

It's like it was built by and for people who don't ever need to use a train.
