When an article says "some scientists think" then remember this: I, a scientist, once thought I could fit a whole orange in my mouth. I could, it turns out, get it in there, but I hadn't given sufficient thought to the reverse operation.

Bets of luck finding one that works for you. The little biters absolutely love me so any tips I spot for good repellent are squirreled away too. It seems like a bad tick year this year based on anecdata, so I might be a bit more proactive on the regular use of Smidge.

I'm not sure if you are UK-based, but if so we have friends that highly rate Smidge. We were given some & it worked well, but haven't tried in extreme mozzie / midgy conditions yet. It contains 20% Picaridin, Hexyl Cinnamal, Limonene and Linalool www.smidgeup.com

It 100% shouldn't be needed, hate that I'm recommending this, but we saw a change in driver behaviour when we got PassPixi signs. There are still idiots who get reported, but it does feel we have fewer close passes now. It doesn't matter if you don't have a camera, they don't know that. passpixi.com

One of our pairs has commandeered a swift box. Not what we intended but they're very welcome.

My partner replaced his, but it was a right faff and really very fiddly. I do wish it was much easier to do across a range of products, and that you could be assured of electrical safety. Our handheld vacuum's battery has died, but can't seem to get spares for that. Such a waste.

I do love a no-drip teapot. Such a small thing but makes such a big difference! I meant to ask, what did you do for your Christmas meal starter in the end?

Ooh, interesting. Does it pour well too, no drips?

In case inspiration is needed, I can recommend this book. We harvested 15kg from our one tree this year so needed ideas! Medlar cake, spiced medlar jam and quinces poached in medlar syrup so far. Medlar sticky toffee pudding planned for Christmas dinner prospectbooks.co.uk/products-pag...

Oooh, I love an oatcake. Particularly when others make them! I tried and they very crumbly, more than expected, if tasty. Honestly, the beetroot dip was incredible. I am sure you will find something lovely.

Sorry Lynn, I didn't mean to kick off a whole 'not vegan' thing. One other suggestion in case you do antipasti / dips. The beetroot recipe is a revelation. Lentil one great too. Haven't tried the pea but sounds tasty. From Anna Jones 'A modern way to cook' a really good veggie / vegan recipe book

Very true, I had forgotten that for some figs are out too. Perhaps that wasn't the best suggestion! I will ponder on more suitable options.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I'm not sure what vegan honey is like - the slightly floral elements of non-vegan honey really adds something, so if vegan honey doesn't have that, I'd be tempted to add in a tad more thyme.

Oh I know that feeling. "I must do that next time". Never happens.

This is one of my absolute favourite dishes. I get very excited when it is fig season! If you can still find decent figs might be an option, it'd still be delicious if you leave the cheese out for a vegan option (though it does use honey too which some vegans don't eat)

Could you write on the labels perhaps? Or if that just fades, cut corners of the labels, or notches into them, in a way which makes them identifiable? Or little sewn symbols? But yes, much better if the manufacturer did!

As others have said, the Galleria Borghese is well worth it. I spent a very long time with the Berninis. I was also very surprised by the Capuchin Crypt. I was only person in there, and found it strangely beautiful.

Heading out for a night away and what do we see tootling across our drive at 3.30pm but this small hog. Scooped up, weighed (260g). Thankfully the rescue had space. He's dehydrated & likely high parasite load, but in the best place now to recover. He's called Medlar, will keep fingers crossed.

So this little one, called Bucky, is doing well at the rescue. Nearly finished treatment for huge parasite load & has doubled weight (now 360g). Needs to put on more before release, 800g or more for hibernation. Will come back to us when has reached that and nights aren't dropping below 5deg C.

Oooh, just in case it's useful for your other travels in UK, I'd really recommend 'The Extra Mile' guidebook. It details delicious alternatives to service stations across major motorway and A road network. Found some great places as a result. theextramile.guide

So I suppose it's rather on brand that my very first Bluesky post is a hedgehog. When we walked to Tesco to get our flu jabs we didn't anticipate coming home with a teenie hog. Spotted on someone's drive. Off to a rescue later to be given once over. Currently dozing on a hot water bottle.
