the final part (which is often omitted, despite this being more prayer than poem) is an invocation of the Lotus Sutra (妙法蓮華経), the historical Buddha Shakyamuni (釈迦牟尼仏), the Tathāgata Abundant Treasures (多宝如来) from ch. 11 of the Lotus Sutra, and the four "Bodhisattvas of the Earth" from ch. 15

we probably all fit within this to some degree, but there are more and less skillful ways of doing it, and certainly it has bad outcomes, as any particular way of life does. but i think i have a kind of general orientation away from it, and am more at fault of overexamination

i meant it mostly gesturally, but if i had to say something: "a life highly adapted to a particular mode of living, a mode that is near frictionless, but relies on staying within it and not questioning its premises, and outside of whose bounds lies both friction and inarticulateness"

there was some story i listened to the other day about a bunch of middle aged men hanging out and drinking and living the unexamined life and it made me really sad, but then the commentary was about how contented and happy these guys were and that made me sadder

when you see a tree, do you see a "tree"? or do you see something of incomprehensible complexity that is dumped in the bucket of "tree"? how do you avoid thinking about the path of every piece of grime that composes a "dirty bit of sidewalk"?
