New leaf on my work Monstera deliciosa living through triple digit temperatures out on the breakroom patio! Will update as it unfolds. In case you didn't know, the width of the new petiole, not the size of the baby leaf, is the best predictor of the final size of a new leaf. This one's a whopper! 🌱

And you can do this for many consecutive nights? That is wild to me. I can function for one day after 5 hours of sleep, but if it happens two days in a row, I am in literal mortal peril, especially if driving. I always assumed the range of healthy sleep was around 7-9 hours, not 5-10 hours. Crazy.

I haven't seen the study, but if I got 6.5 hours of sleep I would eventually crash either figuratively (bed) or literally (shoulder of road). I'm surprised to hear this is "optimal" for anyone (versus just survivable).

That was more self-deprecating general fish counting than specifically today - usually I'm mapping headwater salmonid distribution. But I like to read and I've become a fan of Sanderson but I didn't know about all the layers of this fandom so I'm pensive right now.

Wow, that's broad; is that like a complementary category to historical fiction? I might need to just go back to my biologist hole and count fish instead of having an opinion about this.

Monarchs are pretty rare in the Inland Northwest where I live, but at least some bugs are appreciating it!

It's been a while since I banged this drum, but if you have a case of the Mondays and want to take a break for a minute, the Miami coral reef camera is incredibly busy and beautiful right now. Also, unlike bird feeder cameras, there is no artificial feeding here. 🐟🌎

Wow, what a beast! Does it also destroy epiphytic plants like moss, Java fern, or mounted Anubias? Like, does it just move tons of substrate, or does it actually hate plants?

I found the most amazing bedrock pothole. It is in a shady spot connected to a seep so the walls are wet and completely covered in moss and miniature plants and the rocks inside are so smooth and the water is so clear. I'm confident it's a fairy swimming pool. #hydrology #nativeplants

Update: the flowers only last one day! Ephemeral beauties full of honeybees. I can't help but think how to the mountains around me, people only last one day. Make the world better for your one day. 🌱

It's hit & miss - they're native to some parts of Idaho, but lots of the state is above huge waterfalls that restricted upstream steelhead migration, so various cutthroat/whitefish dominate the headwater salmonid diversity. And of course now we've killed most of the steelhead & introduced brookies πŸ™„

My 9 year old came whimpering into the house the other day because he'd been stung on the finger. I was suspicious because of the odd location, & he fessed up that he was petting a bumblebee. I asked him what else he expected, & he said "I've petted lots of bumblebees & they never stung me". Haha #θ™«

Here's some from the last week or so of sampling...at least you can feast your eyes. Most are too small to eat anyway.

The thought absolutely crossed my mind. If I hadn't been sampling under the stipulations of a scientific permit that forbids collection for personal reasons, both that trout and that bullfrog would have went home with me. 🍽️

There is some kind of longhorn beetle absolutely VIBING in the anthers of my Easter lily cactus flower. I can't ID it because the pollen makes it look like a beetle-shaped Cheetoℒ️, but can you IMAGINE what it would be like to be this beetle? Just rolling in a giant funnel of your favorite food. #θ™« 🌱

Yesterday's adventure in non-native urban fish survey hell concluded in one tiny final pool below a culvert that had THREE different exotic species vying for supremacy in it, haha. Bullfrog, rainbow trout, and green sunfish. 🐍🐟🌎

Apparently it's Fragaria vesca or woodland strawberry (leaves are mostly hairless and end in equally-sized teeth; seeds are raised on the surface of the fruit), which I didn't know existed until you asked.

Yes, that's what I was doing. If you comment with the red pin emoji, then you can go to the feed bsky.app/profile/did:... and see everything you've "saved". It's a janky workaround until Bluesky adds the ability to save posts natively, but some famous people/Bluesky elders feel like it's spam.
