I had a black and white TV in my bedroom and if I pressed my hand against the screen, the whistle stopped. Had to press hard though: couldn't keep it there.

Yeah, it was a mechanical vibration of the wires in a transformer by the picture tube. Could get stupid loud. A lot of Americans my age went deaf at that frequency pretty early on. It's a different frequency in other countries.
