Yeah, the spiritual successors to the genre are Braid, Limbo, Thomas Was Alone, and their ilk, but that branch has also evolved which would lead to the question: are Hollow Knight and Celeste cinematic platformers?
Cinematic platformers are focused on "realism" when it comes to how characters control. That means limited mobility, jumps that are committed vertical/horizontal (i.e. no flea jumping with aerial control), clunkiness in movement, and so on.
If we counted Celeste, why not Mario or Megaman?
