I've *never* watched/read a complete speech of his. I used to enjoy clips of his unhinged ramblings because the sight of him embarrassing himself made me feel vindicated. But then I realised his base only supported him even harder, and it gave way to a miserable sort of resignation. 🫠

Thanks for the little history lesson. It made me realise how little thought I put into the events immediately after the abolishion. e.g. the sheer number of black people brought in like cattle (and treated not much better), and what happened to them when they were suddenly no longer slaves.
