Thank you, sir, for commemorating the clear eyed competence of Hancock, the leadership of Colville (who survived!) and the heroism of the Minnesotans. That day also saw Joshua Chamberlain and the 20th Maine achieve immortality. We can never forget what they did there.
The exact figures are disputed. But at over 80% loses, it is likely the First Minnesota suffered the largest percentage of casualties suffered by any surviving unit in the history of American warfare.
And yet they weren't done. On 3rd July they would have to fight again. /13
