Go ahead and laugh/eyeroll/whatever, but that’s probably the most hardcore South Asian food you’ll get without a plane ticket.

It's increasingly clear that Heritage and Claremont and their ilk are using Trump just as much as he's using the MAGA cult. He's just the pompous conduit for their radical reactionary plans. He probably doesn't even know or care how much he's just a tool to them so long as he gets to act like that.

It's cute in the abstract to watch the sun come up while holding your baby daughter, but not after a rude wakeup and multiple messy diaper changes (vaccines from Friday still messing her up here) over what looks like last year's Canadian wildfire haze redux.

This morning's ride to the Little Red Lighthouse was cancelled due in part to a gruesome atmospheric inversion which is blanketing sulfur and phosphorous over the entire city and in part to a 4:30 wakeup by a screaming baby with a loaded diaper and an inability to get back to sleep until almost six.

I was a German-language major. “Sprockets” remains one of the greatest running bits SNL ever did even if it wasn’t a total popular standard.

In light of the latest round of bullshit in the NYT or WaPo or other "papers of note," I offer you Gen. Sherman's words: "You have heretofore read public sentiment in your newspapers, that live by falsehood and excitement; and the quicker you seek for truth in other quarters, the better."

Pre-‘70s Auto Unions are underappreciated buckets of style and eccentricity. This Auto Union baby ‘50s Thunderbird coupe showed up at a very random Manhattan show a while back:

Now to crack open my copy of "H-Point" and start to figure out the battery stack. And find $14,000 plus however much more I need. And get a garage. And some insulated gloves.

Lots and lots of little details to figure out - instruments, body hardware, copious amounts of suspension tuning and software work even going as stripped-down as I want - but the basics are definitely there.

Build the frame, get everything fitted, draw up a decently sexy carbon fiber shell with a basic canvas top that fits over the integral-with-frame rollbar. Kind of a Rezvani Beast roadster with doors or a Janarelly that's not so obviously retro.

Figure out interior packaging. Decently comfortable seats. Get the seat/pedal/wheel/packaging arrangement finessed. I'm sure that bringing over even parts of the HVAC system from the Ocean is way outside my skills, but wish to add a heater at least.

Keep the steering rack if reasonable. Need to see how Fisker/Magna managed steering assist; three thousand pounds with a decent tire footprint points to power assist still being desirable, if turned WAY down from what the Ocean needed.

Keep the hubs, keep the brake hardware. Would absolutely love to go to full regen for a braking system, but that's not this project. Question: What's the SMALLEST wheel that can fit over the brake discs? Would prefer to go no larger than 18s.

The hubs. I want to keep the hubs and some of the basic suspension arrangement of the Ocean. Hubs are complex enough that I don't want to have to fart around with them myself. Maybe that means we get to keep traction control and ABS? Probably some serious programming in there.

Power management as simple as possible. No boost modes or other sales hooks. That power number is apparently what it can indefinitely sustain without overheating. Would love to retain some sort of traction control, but that depends on software and stuff like hub sensors.

That's the arrangement that (I think) Piëch is using for their upcoming hyperdollar GT. Slightly higher center of gravity, but lower polar moment of inertia and far better overall packaging.

Big engineering exercise: Rearrange the battery cells from the sprawling, high polar moment of inertia skateboard arrangement to a multi-layer T-configuration behind and between the seats while resolving battery management concerns (cooling, mostly).

Rear-mounted motor. That's 275hp with a standard electric torque curve, so a Ferrari 328 with EVERYTHING underneath filled in. Workable given the target weight.

Oh, basic layout: two-seat roadster. 98-inch/2500mm wheelbase, 59-inch/1500mm track, so very close to a current Boxster.

588kg is 1300 pounds of batteries, which is a lot but not enough to be discouraging. Let's aim for a net curb weight of 1350kg/3000lbs.

I don't think it would be terribly difficult to draft up a good solid tube frame, maybe with some semi-monocoque elements (ref: Jaguar D-Type), to form a basis for all this. Is that $14K price for the one with the big battery? Not sure. Battery specs as below:

Most of what's identifiable as "crossover" can get binned, or at least held to sell as spares to people unfortunate enough to get one earlier. I want the battery pack and one motor and some of the running gear.

Starting to do some research into this just for fun. (The lack of both a spare $14,000 and adequate garage space is keeping me honest.) But let's try to map this out a bit: If you disassemble an Ocean, can you reassemble it into something else?

Curious about how plausible it is to jailbreak the OS and de/reprogram it down to basic reliable functionality. If it can be reworked to basically be on the level of an ICE-to-EV conversion, then yeah, huge bargain. If not...

Flip side is Bernie, who for his political career was categorically not a Democrat but caucused with them anyway. He was never in a position to be decisive like the terrible two of Sinema and Manchin but a few more like him could have been.

That's one of the problems with trying to contain everyone under two huge tents. Maybe if there was a variety of potential coalition partners then that faction of the party (or separate weirdo-fringe party) could get the chin flip they richly deserve.

I don't mind small parties in the US because they're very subject to market/Darwininan forces, although the spoiler element is a scary-unfortunate fact of modern life. Gerrymandering is a completely different issue that is unfortunately way tied up in all kinds of machinations in many places.

It'd be interesting to see an election-winning DSA political party as a coalition partner with the Democratic party and some of the leverage they'd be able to exert. Of course, by all evidence Republicans just want openings to be even more reactionary so not the same there.

Big part of what's going on in Israel right now. Netanyahu's most reliable partners are small vociferous parties on the far right fringe and they've contained him in their deranged absolutist approach to the war. (Among other awful things, but still.)
