I may live badly, but at least I don’t have to work to do it.

Who wants to argue with me about movies on national television using this trinary metric? The heat is on The heat is kind of on The heat is *not* on “Two heat is kind of ons for A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE…”

BRAZIL was the inciting motion picture (upon its original release in early ’86, when I was 17).

There’s no lore. I actually kinda like him personally, based on our limited interactions. Just think his artistic sensibility is perpetually juvenile.

Thought I’d escaped HORIZON CHAPTER 1 but Dad wants to see it on his birthday (tomorrow). At least DESPICABLE ME 4 didn’t open in time. He loves the Minions, for some reason. Previous Dad’s birthday films include DIAL OF DESTINY, INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE, TERMINATOR GENISYS, etc.

As someone who was at Cannes 2006, I’m gonna deny that this film was a big deal even at the time.

I’ve got 14 half-star ratings out of around 7000 total. And that’s going back over 20 years, during much of which I was assigned films I had zero interest in seeing.

The latter. I can’t watch films the other way (and wouldn’t log them if I did; in fact I didn’t log a DAZED AND CONFUSED viewing ca. 2004 because I watched it with a large group of friends and we talked nonstop through the whole thing).

In theory I’d prefer to have a rating for everything. (2,741 more films to go!) But also it’s been at least 23 years in every case and even the bad movies are now interesting in a way they weren’t when they were new. And I write those capsules at high speed so it’s low pressure work-wise.

On this, I actually see the hearts as red (probably because I know they’re supposed to be red). A much darker and duller red than the diamonds, but distinct from the black of clubs and spades. So it didn’t leap out at me and I had no clue. Not sure why so many others get it wrong, though!

I watched the first episode (on which I got all the way to 1% but couldn’t work that out in time; no better than 25% since though my colorblindness fucked me on one) and since then have just been playing on the app without actually watching. The repetition was just too annoying for me.

It’s very weird that a Jessica Hausner film that premiered in Competition at Cannes, with a real conversation piece of a scenario, barely opened in theaters months ago, was seen by nobody, and has been forgotten as if it never existed. I didn’t like it at all, but still.

If you feel like watching a Donald Sutherland film, let me recommend a lesser-known favorite: START THE REVOLUTION WITHOUT ME, in which he matches Gene Wilder for sheer silliness.

(To be fair, my car is 17 years old with nearly 200K miles on it, will need to be replaced sometime soon anyway. I’m just reeling at the cost of replacing a catalytic converter that still works but has fallen below CA efficiency standards.)

I enjoy many things about living in California but not so much the part where vehicle emissions standards are so stringent that it sometimes makes more economic sense to buy a new car than to fix your current car so that it’ll pass the smog check.

I’ve always assumed he was deliberately making some sort of rhetorical statement along the lines of “No film is perfect.” But there’s also Don Marks who has found four (4) films, out of 8,515 logged, that he thinks merit five stars. (One of which is AMELIE?)

I almost never look at IMDb’s homepage—just go straight to the search tab—and was just mildly startled by this random recommendation category. (Been years since I would have rated the film in question.)
