Elmore Leonard agrees with you and not your kid's teacher: Never use a verb other than "said" to carry dialogue. The line of dialogue belongs to the character; the verb is the writer sticking his nose in. But "said" is far less intrusive than "grumbled", "gasped", "cautioned", "lied".

I'm a man, and I'd pick the bear. Bear doesn't want to mess with something person-sized unless it's starving. There are well-documented ways of dealing with a bear. They're a wild animal, but their behavior is fairly predictable. I have no fucking idea what a random dude is going to act like.
