I think it's less comfort-based & more competition-based. I try to remind my kid all the time that it doesn't matter who caused a problem, only who is able to solve it. Anyone trying to "climb the corporate ladder" clings to a problem until they can provide the solution.

To point out a problem without having a solution ready is to open up the opportunity for someone else to have a chance to solve it(/get credit/advance faster).
