Runner. Coder. Database hacker. Accidental geographer. Perpetual novice. Chaotic neutral.
By then, I'll be a grandfather for the second time, so I'm sticking close to home. Hopefully, I'll get to see some of you in St. Louis in September at #FOSS4GNA.

I suspect a sizable portion of my geospatial network is gearing up to head to the #EsriUC next week. I wish you all safe travels and hope enjoy the conference. It's a unique experience to have tens of thousands of geographers in one place, so soak it in.

At the start of my career, I used Sol Katz's data translation code that I downloaded from FTP. I learned so much about geo data formats and building software on different platforms from that experience.
Naming the award for Sol Katz might be my favorite thing I have ever seen done in the geo world.

As we approach crab season, here are some tips for my beer snob friends if you find yourself in a crab house by the Chesapeake:
1. Ask what beer they put in the steamer.
2. Order that beer, even if it’s Budweiser.
3. You’ll thank me later.

For me, the majesty of Jim Harrison’s writing is how he deployed a vast vocabulary in a way that seemed conversational. We are so dependent on slang and jargon. His writing is a reminder that there are actual words for most things.
