former senior FBI official isn’t thinking creatively, you don’t have to worry about being pardoned if the big boss has already told your boss not to prosecute you in the first place and to fire anyone who does, even *genuine* law and order types aren’t thinking fast or far enough

100% agree Trump v. US doesn't help things, but it's basically unnecessary for the carnage that Trump II will bring

only kind of related but can't the next president just unpardon you? Or prosecute you for something fake? Once these kinds of things become normal is anyone out of favor with the president safe?

Yeah, like, a "failing" of good LEOs is that they actually believe in the system. Like, some of the "good cops" are faking it when they're shocked that there's someone on the force on the take, but others really aren't!

It is very likely that engaging in the kinds of activities envisioned here would violate any number of state laws. Whike Federal LEOs, etc. are broadly immune from state law when performing their Federal duties, it's up to the courts to determine if what they were doing was lawful.

I would think fear of that potential prosecution of lower-level people would tend to keep them in line as well.

yep, the whole inability to even try to ascertain motive means that no order a President gives can even be considered. As if impeachment wasn’t toothless enough before how are you going to impeach a President whose motives are irreproachable?
