For the last ten years, we have ranked first in the nation for drug overdose deaths. People think of overdoses as something that happens in cities, but they also happen in quiet hollers, when the sun doesn't shine until ten in the morning and it leaves at four in the afternoon.

We've been in the top rankings for per capita cancer, heart disease, and diabetes deaths for as long as I have paid attention. We have an enormous HIV problem, mostly because of dirty needles among drug users. Many of this population are untreated for HIV. Death, death, and more death.

I'm wondering about this phrasing--I'm not sure if you're referencing the song you'll never leave harlan alive ("where the sun comes up about 10 in the morning...") or using similar language because this is a common way for appalachian ppl describe the natural environment?
