You may not be aware a major Cat 5 hurricane struck an area that normally doesn't get them. The eye passed directly over Carriacou and Petit Martinique.

This seems like a sweet story about a teen couple using a PowerPoint presentation to persuade their parents to let them have a (no sex!) sleepover. But it also says a lot about how our culture of fear around teens and sex helped erode the US safety net. 1/

Imagine for one second if the NYT marshaled its massive influence towards voter registration, towards supporting voting rights groups, towards encouraging people to vote and fighting people who try to stop people from voting. Imagine if the NYT actually championed participatory democracy.

People write stories about the monsters in the Appalachian hills, but the real monsters cause these deaths. Not the proximate causes, the cancer or the opioids, but those that use Appalachia as a dumping ground for their pills and those that poison our air and water.

We've been in the top rankings for per capita cancer, heart disease, and diabetes deaths for as long as I have paid attention. We have an enormous HIV problem, mostly because of dirty needles among drug users. Many of this population are untreated for HIV. Death, death, and more death.

For the last ten years, we have ranked first in the nation for drug overdose deaths. People think of overdoses as something that happens in cities, but they also happen in quiet hollers, when the sun doesn't shine until ten in the morning and it leaves at four in the afternoon.

We watch our children and tremble. The teen suicide rate isn't Montana's, but it's still 3x-4x NJ, MA, or NY. And because there are simply fewer people here, the loss hits a little different. We had a suicide cluster at my local middle school at the same time Palo Alto did and it was horrific.

One of the things that I don't think people really grasp about central Appalachia is the death. It's everywhere, all the time. Every single adult male friend that my partner had has died. Every single one. Suicide, car accident, operating table. These were deaths of despair.
