Agreed--even if someone doesn't know exactly what steps to take, getting on mailing lists, learning names, exchanging numbers etc is empowering, in short-term "feeling safer" sense and long-term organizing sense. And this is REAL power, not timeline cleanse stuff that soothes your brain for 10 secs

there's a lot of "it can't happen here" thinking in the US imo and it leads to self-serving beliefs. Like, climate-driven migration is something that will only happen in "far away" countries, even though it will absolutely 100% happen in Florida in the next few decades

so imo FGs are very accessible to olds these days. Even if the overall talent level is higher, I think the average player can "get good" much faster, ie play with intentionality. And playing with intentionality is fun + rewarding no matter where you rank in a competitive bracket

imo it's interesting because even as someone who's played them for years, it's only in the past few years that I've felt "good" at them. And it's not like I've crested some hard-fought plateau, I just think the knowledge base and learning opportunities are so much better now

I think lots of mid-century literature you have to read as "great novels written by intensely weird cranks." Whether it's genre or contemporary fiction. Some real obnoxious people back then somehow developed incredible prose sensibilities

obviously a lot of people are just selfish and want to protect their "right" to speed, but it's shocking to me how many people seem to think of speeding as a negative but fundamental human quality, like humans *must* speed. As if speeding deserves same level of compassion as substance addiction

my understanding is that it's not a technical impossibility, just not a priority. If bluesky (or some other network that uses the protocol) has any longevity, private accounts seem like a "when not if" situation, but this is probably years away. So we'll just have to re-open our livejournals

I started air drying at home during 2020 to avoid laundromats and still do it, pretty much instantly noticed my clothes lasting longer. Plus it weans you off the fear of buying clothes that require "special" care
