Two points to consider: When the mod's job is explicitly being a community "shield" that seems much harder/more emotionally demanding than what the average Reddit mod is being asked to do (not that their jobs are easy). And the stakes are higher too.

Asking someone to do such a hard job for free seems likely to breed a sense of entitlement. While that might even be fair/reasonable considering what they are giving to the community, it's also likely to lead to bad outcomes. Figuring out how to pay people, and/or rotate duties, seems essential.
