Asking someone to do such a hard job for free seems likely to breed a sense of entitlement. While that might even be fair/reasonable considering what they are giving to the community, it's also likely to lead to bad outcomes. Figuring out how to pay people, and/or rotate duties, seems essential.

Two points to consider: When the mod's job is explicitly being a community "shield" that seems much harder/more emotionally demanding than what the average Reddit mod is being asked to do (not that their jobs are easy). And the stakes are higher too.

If I may be so bold as a largely outside observer, I think there’s another issue that is being mentioned but largely passed over here. The work of being a moderator is mentally and morally taxing and time consuming as well, and it’s just not reasonable to ask someone to do it for free.

It ties back w/ what I remember one of those reporters or editors said a few days ago where they don't report Trump's lies or past behavior much anymore because "his voters don't care," but they'll report Dems' foibles because "Dem voters care." Just completely giving up at their jobs and it shows.

It’s been consistently true over the last fifteen years that people, relatively calmly, sounding the alarm about an incoming political or social catastrophe have been quite rudely dismissed by what you could call the Sensible Liberal Class and then immediately proven right. Few learn a lesson.

If we actually did burn down the system, it wouldn’t just be our military we would have to worry about killing us. Every city in the country is ~72 hours from famine. And cities become uninhabitable if the water system fails. That infrastructure doesn’t run automatically. Your way is the only way

I see our only option as trying to do what we can to try and prevent Trump from taking office. And then we actually keep organizing. Both electoral organizing and actual, real, community organizing. Popular education. New parties. Mutual aid networks. Destroying the status quo Democratic party.

The thing I can't stop thinking about is this: I'm 48, and in my adult lifetime there has been one Republican who won the popular vote. But I will probably spend the rest of my life under the authority of a Supreme Court dominated by hard right conservatives. How is that democracy?

I think he could do it. He has the thinks to say, and just spending three minutes reciting all Trump’s crimes (classified files, rape, election/J6, Ukraine impeachment, J6 impeachment, Mueller report, Steele report, pee tape…) would make a strong gallop, and Trump would absolutely spin out.

Obama may have become more critical over time, that's not saying much. His entire presidency was characterized by spinelessness. Not just on Israel (though very much there), but also on Russia/Ukraine and the US banks/Wall Street where in both cases he utterly wasted historic crises-opportunities.

Lots of racist and sexist “liberals”. And the ones who don’t hate her because she’s a Black woman, many of them hate her because “she’s a cop”. To be clear I am NOT endorsing this. Just reporting. I’d be more than happy to vote for her. All things equal I’d prefer her over Biden.

I'm not a Biden cheerleader, never will be, I know enough about his Senate history that I will never ever like the man. He is, however, a relatively responsive target. At least when it comes to people in his base who know how to mobilize.

Biden leaned into climate & environmental justice, & delivered in ways that would’ve been unimaginable a decade ago. It’s a huge part of the Admin priorities & accomplishments- b/c it’s important! We always need to push for more, forever. But if the climate coalition shrugs “meh”, we aren’t serious.

That, and they’re just whiny little babies because it’s not like they don’t have cooling. Those buildings have radiant slab cooling which is actually a really nice way to cool a building. The air temp is high but the radiant temp is low so the overall experience is very comfortable.
